Globally-inspired jazz with dimension Duende Libre is an award-winning jazz trio whose original music combines jazz virtuosity with roots rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa into a “strikingly authentic blend.” Each having apprenticed with direct descendants and master musicians of these traditions, they consider themselves disciples of their teachers. The result: A euphoric new jazz that honors its historical roots, pushing open the boundaries of genre to invoke a powerful sonic freedom. Comprising core members Alex Chadsey (bandleader and keys), Jeff Busch (percussion), and Farko Dosumov (bass), Duende Libre is collectively influenced by the trio’s direct connections with master musicians including Clinton Fearon, Dudley Nesbitt, Dave Hassel, Jesse Bannister, Chucho Valdés, Carlos Santana, Martha Gonzalez, Quetzal Flores, and Joe Santiago. Since 2014, Archipelago Collective’s mission has been to bring world-class chamber music to San Juan Island, providing a creative retreat for our musicians and a unique and enriching experience for our audience. Archipelago Collective's vision is to be an integral part of the rich artistic community on San Juan Island. Their annual chamber music festival provides world-class musicians the time and freedom to explore small ensemble music and delve into the creative process. Throughout the week, they perform in various venues on SJI at which intimacy and interaction with the audience are foremost. Our world-class musicians gather on San Juan Island from around the world to draw inspiration from the stunning natural surroundings, deeply engage in the process of making music, and share in the experience with the community.

Join us for Songs and Stories with Roger McGuinn ; lead singer and one of the founding members of The Byrds! Known for their hit songs “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “Turn, Turn, Turn”, and “Eight Miles High”, Roger McGuinn was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 as a member of the band. As a solo artist, he has released 10 albums and collaborated with, among others, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Chris Hillman. The Rickenbacker 12-string guitar is his signature instrument, and McGuinn developed two innovative and very influential styles of electric guitar playing. The first was "jingle-jangle", ringing arpeggios based on banjo finger picking styles he learned while at the Old Town School of Folk Music, which was influential in the folk rock genre. The second style was a merging of saxophonist John Coltrane's free-jazz atonalities, which hinted at the droning of the sitar, a style of playing first heard on the Byrds' 1966 single "Eight Miles High" and influential in psychedelic rock.
